Tehran, Iran, Dec. 14 – Iran denied on Wednesday that it had accepted a Russian proposal aimed at resolving the international standoff over Tehran’s suspected nuclear weapons program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has demanded that Iran refrain from enriching uranium on its own soil to ensure its nuclear activities which Tehran had hidden from the world for 18 years remain peaceful. Russia had since proposed that Iran enrich uranium on Russian soil instead under international monitors. Highly-enriched uranium is used for atomic bombs.

While in Moscow to hold talks with Russian officials, Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel was quoted by several news agencies as saying that Tehran was willing to accept the proposal.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi, however, rejected the reports and said that Haddad-Adel had insisted that uranium enrichment be carried out on Iranian soil.

Asefi told the state-run ISNA news agency, “As had been announced by Iranian officials on numerous occasions, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, the Islamic Republic’s Majlis Speaker, insisted on enrichment being carried out on Iranian soil during his meeting with Russian officials”.
