Tehran, Iran, Jan. 11 – Iran’s former President Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani vowed on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic would never back down in its nuclear drive, even if it meant being faced with United Nations Security Council sanctions.

Iran resumed from Tuesday previously-suspended uranium enrichment-related activities at its nuclear plant in Natanz.

“We are a critical juncture”, Rafsanjani said in a sermon to worshipers at Tehran University on the occasion of the holy Muslim feast of Eid-ul-Adha. “The Arrogance (United States) and its allies will be regretful if they obstruct [Iran’s nuclear pursuit”>, and Iran will come out the victor”, the powerful cleric said.

“We cannot give up our rights”, he added.

“Since yesterday noon, after research and development began [in the Natanz uranium enrichment site”>, a great wave of unjustified, heavy, and unprecedented attacks against Iran were launched in Western media and political, military, and economic groupings”, Rafsanjani, who currently chairs the State Expediency Council, said.

“The root cause of these assaults lies in the colonialist nature and policies of the West, whose plan is to keep countries lagging behind by a long shot”, he said, adding that the issue would not be resolved even if Iran faced international sanctions.

Turning to the Middle East, Rafsanjani said, “These days, the U.S. is very active in trying to create insecurity. It is acting mischievously in Lebanon and Syria”.

Rafsanjani accused the U.S. of not allowing Iraq to recover from instability.
