Tehran, Iran, Feb. 02 – Iran has officially informed the United Nations nuclear watchdog that it will resume uranium enrichment and cease all voluntary cooperation with international inspectors if its nuclear file is sent to the UN Security Council, the government-owned Mehr news agency reported on Thursday.

The Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani sent a letter to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei informing him that the Islamic Republic will begin industrial-scale uranium enrichment and stop implementing the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty’s Additional Protocol, which allows for snap inspections of declared nuclear sites by IAEA officials, if the Security Council becomes involved in the affair.

The announcement comes as the 35 nations of the IAEA’s board of governors meet at a two-day emergency session in Vienna to discuss reporting Iran to the top international security body.

Larijani’s letter said Iran would not be intimidated by such “pressures”.
