London, Feb. 15 – The European Parliament (EP) censured Iran on Wednesday over its suspected nuclear weapons program and declared its support for United Nations Security Council action against Tehran.

A resolution adopted said that the EP considered the involvement of the Security Council as a “necessary step” in resolving the international deadlock.

The European lawmakers also reiterated their condemnation of “threatening remarks” against Israel by Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Ahmadinejad has described the Holocaust as a “myth” and called for the Jewish state to be “wiped off the map”.

The Euro-MPs criticised Ahmadinejad’s recent meeting with representatives of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad during his trip to Syria and demanded that Iran immediately cease all its support for terrorist groups.

They expressed their “deep concern” on Tehran’s nuclear stance, “notably to the removal of seals at several nuclear installations, and its decision to resume enrichment-related activities”.

The EP called on Iran to “re-establish full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, to reconsider the construction of a research reactor moderated by heavy water, to ratify promptly and resume full implementation of the [nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty’s”> Additional Protocol and, in general terms, to implement the transparency measures requested by the IAEA Director General”.
