Iran calls for international nuclear fuel centre on own soil

Tehran, Iran, Mar. 28 – Iran has suggested that an international nuclear fuel centre be set up on its soil, the government-run news agency Fars reported on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by the Iranian embassy in Moscow, the report said.

“Iran suggested that an international centre be created to make fuel for its nuclear plans on its own soil”, it said, adding that Tehran has apparently rejected a deal with Moscow which involved it carrying out uranium enrichment exclusively on Russia soil.

“Iran would welcome the creation of an international nuclear fuel centre on its territory with the participation of other countries and in the framework of an international consortium”, the Iranian embassy statement said.

“Tehran cannot remain dependent on international suppliers [of nuclear fuel”>”, it added.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said earlier on Tuesday, “Iran should say unambiguously whether it is planning to accept or reject the [Russian”> offer in order to allay the international community’s concerns”.
