Paris, Mar. 30 – Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi welcomed on Thursday a statement adopted unanimously by the United Nations Security Council calling on Iran to suspend all enrichment activities and called on the international community to impose “comprehensive sanctions” against the Iranian regime.

“The only way to prevent the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism from arming itself with nuclear weapons, is to completely abandon appeasement and act firmly and quickly against the mullahs”, said Rajavi, who is President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the opposition movement that first exposed Tehran’s clandestine nuclear activities to the world.

She described Wednesday’s statement by the Security Council as a “useful and necessary step”.

Referring to some three years of negotiations between Tehran and the West, she said in a statement, “While the mullahs secretly and openly insist on continuing their nuclear projects and uranium enrichment, any hesitation and delay in adopting a firm policy and enforcing sanctions against the mullahs’ regime, will only give them more time, the only thing they need to acquire nuclear weapons”.

The Security Council’s “Presidential Statement” gave Iran 30 days to suspend its uranium enrichment program and resume its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In August 2002, the NCRI blew the whistle on Tehran’s secret atomic projects by revealing two massive nuclear sites in Natanz and Arak.
