Tehran, Iran, Apr. 30 – Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator issued a stark warning to the West on Sunday that they would be “harmed” if they stepped up international pressure on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program.

“Becoming a nuclear state is a strategic goal for the Iranian nation, therefore we will spare no effort to reach this goal”, Secretary General of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani told an audience at Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology.

“If you want to harm us, you will be harmed. What I am saying is absolutely serious”, Larijani threatened, in comments directed at the U.S. and Europe.

“We are ready for confidence building but we will not accept pressure imposition. Likewise, we will only be willing to negotiate on the condition that there be no pressure”.

“The European countries can not put forward the old formulas in the new circumstances”, Larijani said, referring to Britain, France, and Germany – the three European countries that for two and a half years led negotiations with Tehran seeking to find a diplomatic solution to the standoff. “Don’t think that we will be satisfied with chocolates. We have control of the issue”.

He said that Tehran was willing to do a “reasonable” amount of confidence-building if its nuclear dossier was sent back to the International Atomic Energy Agency from the United Nations Security Council and Iran’s “right” to carry out uranium enrichment was recognised.

“In our opinion, [keeping Iran’s nuclear file at”> the Security Council is tantamount to no negotiations or negotiations under pressure”.

“Currently, the ball is in their court. Our actions and reactions will be conditioned upon their choices. If they want to move forward with confidence building, Iran is prepared to do so. If they want to trick us, our reaction will be to reconsider our cooperation with the IAEA”, he said.

Larijani accused Britain of acting against Iran’s interests on the nuclear front and in “other issues”.

Iran’s radical President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared on Friday that the Islamic Republic would ignore resolutions by the Security Council calling on it to suspend uranium enrichment.

“Those who want to prevent the Iranian nation from its rights with these methods must know that Iran does not give a damn about any such directives or resolutions”, Ahmadinejad said.

The Security Council had given Iran until April 28 to suspend all its uranium enrichment activities.

The council is expected to meet later on in the week to discuss further steps after Tehran failed to meet the deadline.

IAEA director general Mohamed ElBaradei released a report critical of Iran’s nuclear non-compliance.
