MUNICH – German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier appealed in an interview released Saturday for Iran not to turn down an offer by the five UN Security Council permanent members and Germany to negotiate.

“It’s up to Iran to decide” between a return to the negotiating table or an increasing international isolation for which it would be itself to blame, he said in remarks to the German news weekly Focus.

The condition for the “very comprehensive offer” involving civilian use of nuclear energy and a “broad range” of cooperation was that Iran suspend its activities towards enriching weapons-grade uranium.

“I can only hope that the voice of reason gains the upper hand in Tehran,” said Steinmeier. Focus released the interview before publication on Monday.
