TEHRAN, Iran – A missile Iran claimed to have tested earlier this week with the range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) is an improved version of its previously tested Shahab-3 missile, the deputy head of Iran’s Aerospace Organization said, according to Iranian media.

“Shahab-3 now has a range of 2,000 kilometers and all its components are produced in Iran,” said Nasser Maleki.

Iran tested an upgraded version of the Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile in early August, when Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said the Revolutionary Guards had taken delivery of the missile.

The missiles were proudly displayed last month during a military parade in Tehran with banners draped over them saying “we will crush Israel and the U.S.”

Observers say Iran’s latest missile proclamations may be directed at Israel, which has been threatening in recent weeks to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.

If the new Shahab-3 matches Iran’s claims, not only would Israel be within its range, but so would be parts of Europe, Russia, China and India.

If true it would also likely further raise international concerns about Iran’s missile and nuclear activities.

Iran has said all along that its missile program is one of deterrence, its nuclear activities for the peaceful production of electricity.

Maleki told Iranian journalists that Iran is now capable of producing long-range cruise missiles and is also planning to send a satellite into space sometime in the year beginning March 2005, the start of the Iranian calendar.
