Tehran, Iran, Nov. 20 – Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced on Tuesday that the Islamic Republic would in the near future hold a new round of talks with the United States over the fate of Iraq.

“The Swiss embassy in Iran has submitted a message from the U.S. government to the Iranian Foreign Ministry for holding a new round of talks on Iraq”, Mottaki told reporters.

Iran “has responded positively to the U.S. request”, he said, adding that the discussions would focus on the security situation in Iraq.

He did not state when the talks would be held.

The upcoming round of talks would be the fourth time officials from Tehran and Washington meet to discuss the fate of Iraq.

The three previous rounds of discussions were held on 28 May, 24 July and 6 August.

Washington accuses Iran of backing Shiite militias responsible for much of the daily carnage in Iraq.
