Iraqi forces discover “largest” Iranian EFP cache

London, Apr. 09 – Iraqi security forces in the town of al-Qasim have discovered the “largest explosively-formed penetrator cache found to date”, the U.S. military announced on Tuesday.

The munitions were discovered in a 6-tonne truck in a garage in al-Qasim on April 2, the Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I) said in a posting on its website.

“The cache contained more than 1000 EFP components, more than 3000 pounds of explosives and 45 Katusha 107 mm rockets and stands. Also included in the cache were more than 10 devices used to detonate improvised explosive devices, 250 PKC rounds, 10 60 mm mortar shells and one 60 mm stand”, the report said.

“The rockets are believed to have been manufactured in Iran”, it added.

Separately, Coalition forces detained four “suspected Iranian-backed Special Groups criminals and killed an individual who displayed hostile intent” during an operation in Baghdad on Monday, the MNF-I said in a statement.

“Coalition forces targeted a key member of a logistics network allegedly working with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – Quds Force to move explosively formed penetrators (EFPs) and other weapons into Iraq. The individual is also suspected of distributing weapons to Special Groups criminals in the Baghdad area”, the statement said.

On Sunday, the U.S. military announced that Iraqi security forces had detained two insurgents “preparing three Iranian-made rockets for an attack south of Baghdad April 2”.

“The apprehension came following tips from an Iraqi citizen and the local Abna al-Iraq, or Sons of Iraq”, a statement said.

“Iraqi citizens and Sons of Iraq have been working with the IP to assist in enforcing the rule of law and disrupting criminal activity”, it added.
