ImageABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AFP) — EU foreign ministers will announce new sanctions against Iran Monday, White House national security advisor Stephen Hadley said.

"You're going to hear, as the (British) prime minister (Gordon Brown) indicated, an expectation that out of … the EU foreign ministers' meeting there will be an announcement of new sanctions on Iran," Hadley told reporters.

He was travelling with US President George W. Bush as they flew to Northern Ireland on a final stop of a European tour after talks in London with Brown.

"If the Iranian regime does not change policy and accept the offer that's extended to them it will be very clear from the EU statement this afternoon that they will place new sanctions on Iran," he said.

"There will be financial sanctions including on Bank Melli and also looking at oil and gas sanctions that will be very much significant to the Iranian regime."

Asked about possible oil and gas sanctions against Tehran, Hadley said he expected the EU to first place sanctions on the Iranian bank while considering moves in the oil and gas sector.

Hadley did not say when the sanctions might be put into effect.

European Union foreign ministers were meeting Monday in Luxembourg ahead of a summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
