ImageTehran, Iran, Aug. 24 – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman has emphasised that proposed sanctions against Iran's energy sector will not stand in the way of Iran's nuclear ambitions, the state broadcaster reported.

In reference to recent remarks made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel regarding the potential for direct sanctions against Iran’s energy sector state-run Press TV reported Hassan Qashqavi as stating, “experience has proven that sanctions are futile and won't prevent Iran.”

In an interview published last week by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Chancellor Merkel was quoted as saying, "If there is no progress, we would have to react with further sanctions."

Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and the US are due to meet in September to discuss ways of increasing pressure on Iran over its obligations to abide by United Nations resolutions regarding its nuclear programme.

Iran has long been accused of running a clandestine nuclear weapons programme.
