Tehran, May 19 – Iran hanged two men in a prison in the central city of Isfahan, state media reported on Wednesday.

The semi-official daily Kayhan identified the two men only by their first names Azizollah and Morteza.

Both were accused of drug trafficking.

Authorities routinely execute dissidents on bogus charges such as armed robbery and drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, France’s Foreign Ministry in a statement on Tuesday criticised Iran for hanging five Kurdish activists on 9 May and urged it to not to go ahead with the planned execution of six political prisoners who are all relatives of members of the main Iranian opposition group People’s Mojahedin based at Camp Ashraf in Iraq.

Amnesty International says Iran carried out the highest number of executions in 2009 after China.
