BRUSSELS – European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana confirmed on Thursday that the EU had sent a letter to Iran warning it of consequences if it resumes its suspended nuclear activities.

“We communicated very clearly to our Iranian interlocutors that that will have consequences if they decide to breach or to do something that for us is a breach of the agreements of November,” he told reporters in Brussels.

Earlier on Thursday, Iran threatened to resume uranium conversion work, a precursor to uranium enrichment, in defiance of an accord reached in November after talks with an EU troika of France, Germany and Britain.

An official close to Solana said there had so far been no response to the letter from the Iranians. He said the missive had been signed by Solana and the three countries in the ‘troika’ and addressed to the Iranian official in charge of negotiations, Hassan Rohani.

The foreign policy chief said he did not want to be overly dramatic but warned that if Iran restarts enrichment-related activities “the first thing we would like to do is call a meeting in Vienna to analyse the situation.”

The Austrian capital is the headquarters if the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency.
