Tehran, Iran, Jul. 04 – Iranian and Russian officials hope to see stability restored to Syria as soon as possible, Iranian state media reported on Monday.

During a meeting in Moscow, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Seyed Reza Sajjadi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed the current climate in Syria and the wider Middle East, according to the state-run news agency Fars.

The two sides called for a “rapid solution” to problems in Syria and underlined the necessity for continued dialogue between Iran and Russia about developments in the Middle-East.

Syria has seen popular uprisings calling for the removal of Syrian leader Bashar Assad sprouting across the country for the past three months. Assad has responded to their demands with brutal repression, according to rights group. At least 1,300 civilians are believed to have been killed and a further 10,000 people detained.

Iranian officials have publicly backed Assad, claiming “saboteurs” were exploiting the pro-democracy movement.
