BALTIMORE – An Iranian was sentenced Wednesday to nearly five years in prison for trying to export parts for F-4 and F-14 jet fighters, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Abbas Tavakolian, 58, pleaded guilty in April to attempting to export munitions from the United States to Iran. He was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison.

Authorities say that Tavakolian, of Tehran, transferred about $6,000 from Panama to the U.S. in July 2004 to acquire the aircraft components.

Tavakolian began making deals with undercover agents, and agreed to meet them to acquire the parts for use by the Iranian military. The embargoed or prohibited items were to have cost about $380,000.

Tavakolian was arrested and taken into federal custody in December.
