Tehran, Iran, Jul. 07 – In Iran one person becomes addicted to drugs every three minutes, according to the head of the Education and Prevention Unit of the Office to Combat Drugs.

“Every three minutes one person in society becomes addicted to drugs”, Hamid Sarami told an anti-narcotics committee in the Iranian city of Hamedan (western Iran) today.

Sarami said that, apart from herbal drugs, there were over 1,700 forms of manufactured chemical drugs in Iran.

Half of all problems in society were down to widespread drug usage in the country, he said, adding, “Drug addiction is fast increasing”.

In April a state-run news agency, quoting an official survey, announced that there were four million drug addicts in Iran.

Even so, the latest government statistics are believed by many Iran experts to be far short of the actual number of drug addicts.

Previous estimates have put the total number of illegal-drug users in Iran at more than seven million.

On April 7, Akbar Alami, a member of Iran’s Majlis (parliament) from Tabriz (northwest Iran), went public and revealed that the actual number of drug users in Iran stood at 11 million.
