Amid reports of Iranian attacks on Islamic State forces in Iraq, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Wednesday that the U.S. is not coordinating military actions with Iran and has no plans to do so.

“At this point, our calculation about the wisdom of cooperating militarily with the Iranians has not changed: We’re not going to do it,” Mr. Earnest said.

Pentagon officials have said they believe Iran has used F-4 Phantom jets to carry out airstrikes against Islamic State militants. The actions have raised concerns in the Defense Department that Iran’s increased involvement in the region could fuel sectarian tension.

Mr. Earnest declined to confirm any specific military actions, but he underscored the perils of cooperating with Iran, which he described as “a country that actively supports terrorist organizations

“It’s not necessarily in the best interests of our military personnel to be sharing significant intelligence information or to be directly coordinating with them militarily,” he said.
