LONDON – Britain is “seeking clarifications” of Iran’s nuclear plans after Tehran announced it is set to resume sensitive atomic work in breach of an accord with the European Union, a spokesman said Monday.

The British Foreign Office, which warned at the weekend that such a move could jeapordize crucial EU-Iran nuclear talks, said it was studying a letter sent by Tehran to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“We are seeking clarifications on their intentions,” a ministry spokesman told AFP. “We are studying the letter sent by the Iranians.”

Iran has handed a letter to the IAEA that officials said formally notified the UN watchdog of the imminent resumption of uranium ore conversion, the precursor to enrichment in the nuclear fuel cycle.

The EU-3 of Britain, France and Germany has warned that any resumption of conversion or enrichment will prompt them to back US-led calls for Iran to be referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.

The IAEA has been investigating Iran’s nuclear programme since February 2003 on US charges that the Islamic republic is secretly developing nuclear weapons.
