Iran’s president says he will share his country’s nuclear technology with other Islamic countries, the nation’s state media says.

The technology would apply to peaceful nuclear programmes.

“The Islamic Republic never seeks weapons of mass destruction and with respect to the needs of Islamic countries, we are ready to transfer nuclear know-how to these countries,” the official IRNA news agency quoted president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying.

The comments were made during a meeting with Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly in New York, IRNA added.

Mr Ahmadinejad reportedly said his country had mastered the fuel cycle and would use the technology within international laws and in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA).

Teheran insists its nuclear operations are only being used to generate electricity, but there is widespread suspicion among the international community that it is looking to produce nuclear weapons.

Iran’s decision to resume uranium conversion last month was in violation of international agreements and led to an emergency meeting of the IAEA to discuss whether to impose sanctions.
