London, Oct. 13 – The European Commissioner for External Relations issued a statement at the European Parliament on Wednesday calling on Iran to reverse its “current unhelpful trend” regarding its sensitive nuclear activities.

“In the current climate it is inevitable that discussions about Iran focus on its nuclear programme. That is one of the most serious security issues currently on the international agenda”, Jan Figel, European Commissioner for Education said on behalf of the Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations.

The Commission warned of the possibility of Iranian referral to the United Nations Security Council “when necessary” if Tehran continued to defy the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Commission also highlighted its “deep concern” at the violation of human rights in Iran. “Regarding the actual situation of human rights in Iran, there is a growing cause for concern”, it said.

“There are other serious issues of concern which have emerged recently: the juvenile death penalty cases–despite the existence of a moratorium; the arrest of members of the Baha’i faith; the excessive use of force to suppress unrest in the provinces of Khuzestan and Kurdistan; continued suppressions of press freedom. Each is a matter of deep concern”.

It hoped that Tehran would “accurately assess what the stakes are and will, as a result, take the steps necessary to reverse the current unhelpful trend, including by ensuring full cooperation with the international organisations”.

The IAEA board of governors has adopted a resolution that would refer Iran’s nuclear file to the Security Council for possible sanctions.
