Tehran, Iran, Oct. 17 – A 23-year-old man died on Sunday after being shot nine times for unknown reasons by an agent of Iran’s paramilitary police, the State Security Forces, a state-run daily reported on Monday.

On Friday, Seyyed Mostafa was stopped by police as he was driving with his friends in his car, the daily Hamshahri wrote.

Mostafa was shot at point blank nine times by an agent of the SSF after he stepped out of his car in accordance with the agent’s instructions.

He died in Vali-Asr Hospital Sunday morning. Mostafa’s friends had said that no reason was given for his murder.

The Greater Tehran Public Relations Office has maintained that police originally thought the car which Mostafa was driving was stolen.

Iranian police brutality is considered among the worst in the world. In May, a 20-year-old man was gunned down by a senior official of the State Security Forces at an underground railway station in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran. The murder, witnessed by hundreds of rush-hour commuters, sparked clashes between angry protesters and security forces in several neighbourhoods of Karaj.

Hojjatol-Islam Asgar Najafi, who shot Ali Amini-Tehrani in the head at point blank at a crowded Pol-e Fardis Metro station, was a cleric serving as the SSF Deputy Commandant for Islamic Indoctrination and Political and Social Affairs.

Facing public outrage over the cold-blooded murder, the authorities decided to have Najafi tried by the Special Court for the Clergy, an extra-judicial body that exclusively deals with wrongdoings by mullahs. The SCC metes out extremely lenient sentences, such as defrocking of a cleric convicted of murder.

Najafi was never convicted.
