Iran, EU end nuclear talks with no sign of result

-

Reuters: Iran and the European Union ended talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme on Tuesday with no clear indication of a result. BRUSSELS, July 11 (Reuters) – Iran and the European Union ended talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme on Tuesday with no clear indication of a result.

Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told a brief news conference they would be in contact to see how to proceed after Solana reports to foreign ministers of the major powers in Paris on Wednesday.

Neither man gave any details of the talks at which the West demanded that Iran should give a substantive response to an offer from the powers of incentives for it to suspend uranium enrichment, which can be used to make nuclear weapons.

Solana said they had reviewed events in the five weeks since he delivered to Tehran the offer of economic, technological and political incentives, backed by Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia and China.

“Tomorrow I will have a meeting with ministers of the six countries and I will report. We will make an analysis of the situation at this period of time and we will see how to proceed,” Solana said.

“Dr Larijani and myself will be in contact telephonically to see how to proceed,” he added.

In a remark that might be seen as rebuffing Western pressure for an immediate answer to the proposals, the Iranian negotiator said: “Since we have to go into a long process, we must be patient and do everything exactly.”
