Germany studying Iran’s response on nuclear proposal

AFP: The German government on Wednesday said it was closely studying Iran’s response to a proposal by world powers to end the crisis over its nuclear programme. BERLIN, Aug 23, 2006 (AFP) – The German government on Wednesday said it was closely studying Iran’s response to a proposal by world powers to end the crisis over its nuclear programme.

“We are in the process of analysing this expansive and complex text,” a spokesman for the foreign ministry said.

He said Berlin afterwards would discuss the document with other nations trying to broker an end to the row over Tehran’s nuclear activities, which the West views as a bid to build nuclear arms.

According to Iranian officials, Tehran’s response to the proposal includes a call for “serious talks” but gives no indication it would freeze uranium enrichment as demanded by the UN Security Council.

The proposal was drafted by the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany and offered Iran a range of trade, technology and security incentives in return for suspending uranium enrichment.
