Tehran, Iran, Oct. 11 – A senior Iranian official announced on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic would not suspend its uranium enrichment activities despite a demand by the United Nations Security to do so.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its peaceful nuclear activities. It has not and will not suspend [uranium”> enrichment”, Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel told domestic reporters.

Haddad-Adel made the remarks as senior officials from the permanent five members of the Security Council – Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States – and Germany prepare to hold talks on Iran’s nuclear threat later on Wednesday via video conference.

“We seek negotiations; however, we openly announce that those who want to resolve the issue of Iran’s nuclear program using threats will not benefit from their actions”, he said.

Haddad-Adel is a close ally of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Security Council adopted Resolution 1696 on July 31 demanding that Tehran suspend all its uranium enrichment activities by August 31 or face the threat of sanctions. Tehran missed that deadline.

The chief of the UN nuclear watchdog Mohammad ElBaradei reported on August 31 that Tehran had not suspended its uranium enrichment activities and had blocked inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency from inspecting its nuclear facilities.
