Tehran, Iran, Jan. 19 – A top Iranian official accused the United States on Friday of trying to expand the current conflict in Iraq to nearby Lebanon.

“The U.S. is trying to spread religious instability from Iraq to Lebanon”, Ali Larijani, the secretary-general of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and the Islamic Republic’s chief nuclear negotiator, told the Lebanese daily as-Safir. His remarks were reported by Iranian state media.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported from Beirut that Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Friday promised that his opposition alliance would mount an “effective” action to bring down the U.S.-backed government in the coming days.

Speaking in an interview with his group’s al-Manar television, Nasrallah that consultations among Hezbollah’s political allies were drawing to a close and they would release a statement shortly that spelled out the steps to be taken.
