Iran Focus, 8 Jan. – Reza Shahabi, a member of the Board of Directors Tehran’s Bus Drivers Syndicate, who had gone on a hunger strike 23 days ago to protest against prison officials’ refusal to allow him proper medical care (Iran Focus, 2 Jan.), won a five-day leave from prison.

Mr. Shahabi had lost 15 kilograms and was suffering from high blood pressure, according to his wife, Robabeh Rezai.

The labour activist had been arrested on June 12, 2011 and taken to Evin Prison’s notorious ward 209. Following a year in detention, he was ultimately sentenced to six years imprisonment in April 2012 by the 15th Branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran after being convicted of “acting against state security.”
