Baghdad, Jan. 29 An official from Iran’s embassy in Baghdad was arrested by Iraq’s security apparatus.
Heydar Javaheri was gathering intelligence under the cover of an economic attaché in the Iranian embassy.
He admitted to having illegally entered the country from Iran using fake travel documents after the fall of the previous regime.
Javaheri had links to a number of Iraqi Shiite parties believed to be funded and supported by the Iranian regime, and admitted to have been working in close cooperation with a number of Iraqi newspapers who were also financed by Iran.
Javaheri revealed after interrogation that he informed such newspapers of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security’s (MOIS) current political stances so that they could act as mouthpieces, and he also admitted to distributing funds from Iran to the newspapers.
