In late morning trading in New York the dollar was down 0.4 percent at 1.0319 Swiss francs <CHF=>.
"Rumors of a U.S. military ship firing on Iran was behind the move in the oil market, which in turn spilled over into currencies," said Gregory Salvaggio, a currency trader at Tempus Consulting in Washington.
