TEHRAN, April 6 (Reuters) – Iran's football federation has recalled Mohammad Mayelikohan as head coach in place of Ali Daei after the team's shock loss to Saudi Arabia in a World Cup qualifier last month.
Iranian media reported on Monday that Mayelikohan, who held the post from 1995-97, would replace Daei, the world's highest international scorer with 109 goals in 148 appearances, as coach of the three-times Asian champions.
Daei was sacked after regional rivals Saudi Arabia launched a stunning late fightback to beat Iran 2-1 on March 28 in Tehran.
The defeat left Iran fourth in Group Two, behind North Korea, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
The top two teams in the group qualify automatically, with the third placed team able to advance via two playoff matches.
