TEHRAN (Reuters) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hailed on Tuesday his re-election as a victory for the Iranian people and a defeat for the Islamic Republic's enemies.
The hardline president spoke a day after Iran's top legislative body confirmed he had won the June 12 election by a landslide and dismissed complaints of irregularities submitted by two defeated, pro-reform opponents.
"This election was actually a referendum. The Iranian nation were the victors and the enemies, despite their … plots of a soft toppling of the system, failed and couldn't reach their aims," the official IRNA news agency quoted him as saying.
Iran often accuses the West of seeking to undermine the Islamic state through a "soft" or "velvet revolution" with the help of intellectuals and others inside the country.
