ImageBanknotes defaced with opposition slogans are banned in Iran from this week, but they remain a symbol of the Green Movement as it refuses to succumb to crackdowns.

The anger of the protesters emerged in scribbled words such as “dictator” and “executioner” on banknotes. Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic who appears on every banknote, was labelled a Nazi, killer and vampire on the notes. Other writers hailed the green revolution and called for peace.

Along with street protests activists have used graffiti, posters, videos and opposition websites to keep the rebellion alive. At least 50 have been killed since protests began after the disputed election in June.

Hundreds of people were arrested during protests to mark the festival of Ashura last month.

The Government in Iran has blamed foreign powers for the campaign of civil disobedience.
