ImageTehran, Mar. 31 – A spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the release of a senior diplomat in Pakistan by Iranian intelligence agents signifies Iran’s regional power.

"The location where the Islamic Republic's commercial attaché to Peshawar Heshmatollah Attarzadeh-Niyaki was held was identified by Iran's intelligence agents. He was brought home after a series of complex and complicated operations … Finally, the [Iranian] intelligence agents themselves freed our diplomat. The release of the diplomat shows the strength of Iran's security power", Ramin Mehmanparast told the state-run Fars News Agency.

While signifying Iran’s regional strength, Mehmanparast attacked the role played by Western nations in the region. "They came to our region and established a military presence in different countries … and afflicted our region with turmoil and insecurity”, Mehmanparast said.

Iran has long been accused of playing a destructive role in the region through its widespread support for terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon.
