Tehran, May 19 – An Iranian army commander announced that Iran will unveil an improved version of the country’s chief battle tank, the Zolfaqar, next month.
“The army’s Ground Forces have carried out abundant research and study into upgrading the technology and functions of the Zolfaqar tank. The upgraded version will be unveiled in the (Iranian) month of Khordad (22 May – 21 June),” Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan told the state-run Fars news agency on Tuesday.
According to Pourdastan, laser systems have been mounted onto the tank while upgrades have been made to the fire navigation system, increasing the tank’s precision in targeting.
This latest upgrade to the army’s main battle tank is a continuation of the current Iranian leadership’s desire to develop and upgrade home-made weaponry as the international community sidelines Iran with further sanctions over its nuclear defiance.
