Tehran, Jun. 12 – A large group of people are walking towards Ferdowsi Square in central Tehran. There is a heavy police presence in the area, an Iran Focus correspondent reports.
All garbage cans have been removed from 16th Azar Street on Saturday which marks one year since anti-government protests took the nation by storm. A large contingent of Bassij militia on motorbikes have been deployed in the area.
Units from the State Security Force deployed at Tehran’s Rah Ahan (Railyway) Square blocked Mossadeq and Kargar Jonoubi streets. Bystanders, attempting to board buses jeered and taunted them.
Many plain-clothes agents and special units were deployed in the Labour Ministry apparently because the Motor Vehicle Department on Azadi Street lacked the capacity to house all of them.
Large numbers of the Bassij and Revolutionary Guards have been stationed in Meqdad base, which is tasked with maintaining control on Azadi Street.
Reports from elsewhere:
Shiraz — Students at the University of Shiraz held a gathering before lunch on Saturday, chanting “death to the dictator”.
Sari — Residents in the northern Mazandaran provincial capital late on Friday chanted “Allah-o Akbar” (God is the greatest), “death to [Supreme Leader] Khamenei”, and “death to the dictator” in Shohada and Mo’alem squares as well as in Amir Mazandari Street and the Municipality Park.
There were clashes between people and State Security Forces outside the Ave Cinna Medical and Specialist Complex. Opposition supporters jeered the security forces which eventually left the area.
