TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran summoned the Afghanistan ambassador in Tehran on Saturday to protest at demonstrations by a group of Afghans outside its mission in the neighbouring country, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Some Afghan lawmakers have said dozens of Afghans have been executed in Iran in recent weeks and there have been a series of protests in various parts of Afghanistan.

Around 1,000 Afghans demonstrated on Thursday against alleged ill-treatment and executions of some Afghan refugees by Iranian authorities on charges of drug-smuggling. The demonstration ended peacefully.

“Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Afghan ambassador to Iran on Saturday over protests in front of its diplomatic mission in Kabul,” Fars said.

Iranian media has recently reported execution of some convicted Afghan refugees for smuggling drugs.

Iran has been host to millions of Afghan refugees since the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s and later during the civil war in 1990s. In recent years it has been deporting some of them back to Afghanistan.
