CAIRO (Reuters) – Egypt has detained an Iranian diplomat who worked at Iran’s mission in Cairo for “passing information,” the news channel Al Arabiya reported on Saturday.

The Arabic channel named the man as Kassem al-Hosseini in its brief news item. The report could not immediately be confirmed.

Iran and Egypt severed ties after Iran’s Islamic Revolution and Egypt’s recognition of Israel but, although they do not have full diplomatic relations, each has a mission staffed by diplomats in the capital of the other nation.

Egypt has signaled it is ready to re-establish diplomatic ties in a shift in policy since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak in February.
