Tehran, Jun. 06 – Armenian Ambassador to Tehran Grigor Arakelyan stated on Sunday that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s upcoming visit to Armenia will be very important in strengthening ties between the two states.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA quoted Arakelyan as saying that Ahmadinejad’s visit will be in response to his Armenian counterpart’s visit to Tehran, aimed at upgrading joint ties in various dimensions.

“The ties are now at the highest possible level covering political and cultural domains”, he said. “Iran and Armenia enjoy ample potentials for expansion of bilateral relations and regional cooperation”.

Arakeylan also stressed that transport routes between the two countries could be a key ground for cooperation.

Referring to the recent Tehran-Yerevan joint economic cooperation commission session held in Tehran, Arakelyan said the agreement inked at the end of the meeting could serve as a timetable for joint activity in different economic fields.

It was agreed at the end of this session that the road ministers for each country would get together in the next three months to finalise a railroad construction project.

It was agreed in principle that Iran would extend its railway for 60km from Jolfa to the border point with Armenia. In return Armenia would build 400km of railway linking to the Iranian side.

This would allow for increased commercial and passenger trade between the two countries.
