Tehran, Iran, Dec. 07 – Agents of Iran’s State Security Forces (SSF) in the western town of Khorramshahr arrested five individuals on charges of installing dishes for households wishing to view satellite channels, and confiscated more than one thousand satellite parts, state-run dailies reported on Wednesday.

At least 787 satellite systems were rounded up, along with 192 satellite dishes, 511 LMB antennas, and 84 receivers.

The five detained individuals will face charges of having previously provided 1,300 households with the means to receive satellite programs unfiltered by Iran’s stringent broadcasting regulations.

The Islamic Republic banned satellite dishes in 1995 under the pretext of being “too Western”. The crackdown on satellite dishes was prompted by broadcasts from Iranian opposition groups whose television programs are reported to have a large audience in Iran.
