Tehran, Iran, Jun. 10 – Iranian authorities have arrested 10 people on charges related to endangering national security prior to Iran’s first game in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, a semi-official daily reported on Saturday.

The individuals arrested were accused of planning to create insecurity and chaos after each match the Iranian football squad played, the hard-line daily Jomhouri Islami wrote.

The arrests were made in a night raid in the central city of Isfahan.

The report said that the detained individuals were planning to come out into the streets after matches to damage government buildings.

The Iranian football team’s first match is on Sunday when it will be up against favourites Mexico.
