Qazavi was appointed to the post on Friday by hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the government-owned English daily Tehran Times reported on its website.

Qazavi previously served as a member of the Export Development Bank of Iran (EDBI) board of directors.

He took over as CBI deputy governor from Mohammad-Javad Vahaji, who had occupied the post since 2003.
