Tehran, Iran, Jan. 02 – Pakistan had told Iran not to send envoys to the funeral procession of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who was killed in a suicide attack by suspected Islamists on Thursday, an Iranian official said.

“Iran had voiced its readiness to take part in the funeral but Pakistani officials did not agree with it due to a special situation which was developed in the country” after Bhutto’s assassination, said Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini. He made the remarks at his weekly press conference on Monday.

Bhutto, 54, who headed the Pakistan People’s Party, was assassinated in her car by an attacker who shot her after a campaign rally and then blew himself up. The attack, which left at least 20 other people dead, took place in the city of Rawalpindi ahead of elections due on January 8.
