Paris, Sep. 1 – Iran has announced that it will convert tons of raw uranium, ‘yellow cake’ into Uranium hexafluoride, used to produce enriched uranium, according to a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Uranium hexafluoride is spun in centrifuges to produce enriched uranium. Highly enriched uranium is used for making nuclear weapons.

The IAEA said in the confidential report circulated to diplomats that Iran is planning an experiment “involving 37 tones of yellowcake”. Experts said that this was the equivalent of producing 5 nuclear bombs.

The U.N. agency said it was still trying to unravel Iran’s nuclear programme and that more time is needed for its investigation complete.

The agency rebuked Iran for being late with the provision of much of the information.

“In (many) cases, sufficiently detailed information has been so late that it has not been possible to include an assessment of its sufficiency and correctness in this report,” the IAEA said.

The IAEA has repeatedly asked Iran to come clean about all of its nuclear activities. The United States among many other countries insists that Tehran’s nuclear research program is simply a front for en extensive nuclear arms program.
