Tehran, Iran, Aug. 12 – Irans influential former President Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani termed Thursdays resolution adopted unanimously by the International Atomic Energy Agencys Board of Governors as very cruel and said that Tehrans nuclear decision was irreversible.
Addressing a gathering of worshippers at Tehrans Friday prayers sermon, the current Chairman of the State Expediency Council warned that the resolution, which was critical of Tehrans nuclear activities, should not be taken lightly.
This is a very important event and is likely to put us and the region in new circumstances and will open a new phase in our revolution, Rafsanjani said.
The influential cleric said that he was stunned by the fact that countries in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) accepted the resolution which was tabled by the three European countries that had spearheaded nuclear negotiations with Tehran France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
This week, Tehran disobeyed a request by the IAEA, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, not to restart uranium conversion activity at a plant in Isfahan, central Iran.
In comments directed at Western leaders, Rafsanjani said, Take note that Iran is not a country which you can treat like Iraq or Libya, adding that the Islamic Republic had made an irreversible decision to pursue its nuclear program.
Tehran is suspected of pursuing a covert nuclear weapons program under the cover of civilian nuclear use.
Alireza Jafarzadeh, an Iranian dissident who helped uncover two of the Iranian regimes secret nuclear sites back in August of 2002, told the Associated Press on Tuesday that Iran had manufactured about 4,000 centrifuges capable of enriching uranium to weapons grade.
