Tehran, Iran, Aug. 30 – The head of Iran’s Judiciary on Monday called harsh and speedy punishments for individuals convicted of a variety of organised crimes, many of which carry the death penalty.

Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi was speaking at a gathering of senior judicial officials a day after the shooting of a judge in the Iranian capital.

“In the present circumstances, criminals have formed at different levels and they must be rooted out more meticulously”, Shahroudi said, adding that they must be dealt with “harshly”.

The Judiciary Chief called on the officials to create special offices to deal with organised crime as a priority.

“Fraudsters in land ownership should be treated as Mofsed-o-fel-Arz [meaning corruptors of society, whose blood can be spilled”> and disruptors of economic order, and special courts should be created to deal with them”.

He called on the judiciary officials to hand out quick and severe punishments to rapists, who he also classed as Mofsed-o-fel-Arz.
