Tehran, Iran, Sep. 06 – Iran’s newly-installed chief of police warned a meeting of his task force commanders on Tuesday that they had to deal decisively and rapidly with unrest and protests, or they might turn into international issues.

“The slightest disturbance that happens in society can turn into an international affair”, Revolutionary Guards Brigadier General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam told his senior officers. “So the response by the State Security Forces must be extremely fast and accurate”.

Ahmadi Moghaddam was referring to a string of reports in the international press in recent weeks on the heavy-handed suppression of anti-government protests in several Iranian cities and towns, particularly in the regions of Kurdistan, Khuzistan, and Baluchistan, home to Iran’s ethnic Kurds, Arabs and Baluchis.

The police commander announced last week that as of Tuesday, the para-military police would launch a joint campaign along with various other security apparatus to crack down on “trouble-makers” in the country.
