Tehran, Sep. 27 – A senior member of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the highest decision-making body on military and security issues, threatened that Iran might pull out of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) that it had signed. Ali Larijani threatened action if Iran was put under pressure by Europe and the United States to curb its nuclear program.

Larijani, the personal representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the council, said, “If the Europeans and the United States exert excessive pressure on us, we will have no other choice.”

Larijani insisted that Iran was not about to abandon its uranium enrichment program, which Western officials insist is part of a covert nuclear weapons program. Larijani also called for speedy efforts for the construction of a heavy-water reactor which would be able to produce weapons-grade plutonium.

Europe and the United States are adamant that Iran abandon its nuclear activities before the mid-November deadline for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to decide whether to take further action against Iran. The United States would like the Board to decide to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council.
