Tehran, Iran, Sep. 22 – More than 12,000 people have been arrested in Tehran on various charges since the launch of a new crackdown on dissenters and “trouble-makers” in the Iranian capital, the police commander of Tehran Province told a gathering of law enforcement chiefs, state-run dailies reported on Thursday.

Brigadier General Reza Zarei said that 3,000 trouble-makers had been arrested; adding that state courts had handed down prison sentences for hundreds of them.

Zarei said that police had arrested more than 12,500 “social polluters” over this period and confiscated over 3,000 satellite dishes and receivers.

The Tehran police chief said, “64 percent of the arrested are between 25 and 29 years of age”, adding that 55 percent of them had not graduated from high school.

He went on to say that a further 400 police foot patrol, motorbike, and vehicle units had been dispatched to various parts of Tehran as part of the plan to increase national security.
