Tehran, Iran, Oct. 07 – Several thousand Iranian hard-liners staged a rally organised by the ultra-Islamist Bassij militia in support of the country’s suspected nuclear weapons program in the Iranian capital on Friday following a fiery prayers sermon.

The protestors, rallying in central Tehran, lifted banners reading, “Nuclear technology is our right”.

They chanted slogans against the West, including, “Death to England”, “Death to America”, “Death to Israel”, “If [Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali”> Khamenei gives us the order for Jihad, the world’s armies would not be able to stand up to us”. At one stage, the crowd repeatedly chanted, “Death to Bush, death to Bush”, referring to U.S. President George W. Bush.

Earlier, Guardian Council chief Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati told Tehran’s Friday prayers worshippers the Islamic Republic was unwavering in its nuclear venture and unafraid of international sanctions.

“We mustn’t be afraid of sanctions. Even though there is a loss, it also has benefits. We should not fear the losses”, Guardian Council chief Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said.

“If we fear sanctions then we will have to accept submission”, Jannati said.

The IAEA board of governors has adopted a resolution that would refer Iran’s nuclear file to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions.
